| The
12th Cinemanila International Film Festival will feature French documentarian
and film critic Hubert Niogret’s ‘RETURN TO MANILA: Filipino
Cinema’ to the Filipino audience on December 2, 2010, 8:00 p.m
at the Alliance Francaise de Manille, 209 Nicanor Garcia Avenue, Makati
City. The documentary, which had its world premiere at the 15th Pusan
International Film Festival in October this year, is described as
a “film about a film,” as it presents for the first time
in decades filmmakers discussing filmmaking as Filipinos and Philippine
cinema. Ever since the screening of Filipino director Lino Brocka’s film ‘Insiang’ at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival, the door has opened for the lesser-known but talented Filipino directors to the attention of world audience. Films by masters of the medium Ishmael Bernal, Mario O’Hara, Mike de Leon, Peque Gallaga, and Marilou Diaz-Abaya were invited and made news at numerous international film festivals. Unfortunately, the momentum was seemingly stemmed upon the tragic death of Brocka in 1991. But it didn’t curtail the unstoppable growth of local cinema in the long term, for new blood has started to make waves in the international arena anew thru emerging masters like Lav Diaz, Brillante Mendoza, Jeffrey Jeturian, and Raymond Red. This welcome event and other related facts and thought-provoking opinions are highlighted in Niogriet’s documentary. Comprising most of the documentary’s content are insightful interviews with directors Laurice Guillen, Jeffrey Jeturian, Tikoy Aguiluz, Raymond Red, and Brillante Mendoza. ‘RETURN TO MANILA: Filipino Cinema’ is produced by the Cinemanila International Film Festival Foundation, the Film Development Council of the Philippines, and the National Commission on Culture and the Arts. The premiere event is hosted by the Cinemanila International Film Festival and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, and hosted by the Alliance Francaise de Manille, and the Embassy of France, Manila. The seats of the screening are limited. Kindly make your reservations by emailing sabrina@alliance.ph. The 12th Cinemanila International Film Festival will be held from December 1 to 5, 2010 in Robinsons Movieworld Galleria, Quezon City. Around 50 international and local films will be screened in a span of 5 days – from the current toasts of the local indie scene to the award-winners and favorites at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Pusan.
