![]() The worldwide phenomenon that is Korean cinema wouldn’t be possible without a man who with the vision and determination to make it happen – Kim Dong Ho, the founding director of Asia’s biggest film festival and one of the world’s most prestigious, the Pusan International Film Festival. Since its inception in 1999, the festival has enabled to develop Korean cinema tenfold, support emerging Asian filmmakers, and bring the best of world cinema to Korean audience as well. In fact, it’s been referred to as the “Cannes Film Festival of Asia”, where prominent international film business players flock to in search of films for possible distribution. For the past 15 years of his leadership, Mr. Kim has developed milestones like the Pusan Promotion Plan, a film production fund body. Its beneficiaries include well-known Asian filmmakers like Fruit Chan, Nguyen Vo Minh, Shunji Iwai, Garin Nugroho, Junji Sakamoto, Darejan Omirbayev and Aktan Abdykalikov. Many young filmmakers are also crediting Mr. Kim for putting up the Asian Film Academy, which offers study grants and provides world-class film production training. Mr. Kim expressed support for Philippine-initiated film development endeavors. In 2000, he graced the Cinemanila International Film Festival as its special guest, and on the 2005, he personally received a Cinemanila award for lifetime achievement. Furthermore, Philippine movies have also enjoyed exposure in the Pusan International Film Festival. Last year, 20 Filipino films were screened as part of a special retrospective on the country’s cinema. This year, 10 films made it in the roster, including Mark Meilly’s ‘Donor,’ which won Best Picture in Brussels International Film Festival 2010. As a tribute to Korean cinema’s inspiring growth and Mr. Kim’s innovation, the 2010 Cinemanila International Film Festival will screen Korean films that screened at the Pusan International Film Festival. These are: ‘The Housemaid’ by Im Sang-soo (2010), ‘Mother’ by Bong Joon-ho (2009), ‘Secret Sunshine’ by Lee Chang-dong (2007), and ‘Thirst’ by Park Chan Wook (2009). The following independent Korean films will likewise be shown: ‘Animal Town’ by Kyu-hwan Jeon (2009), ‘Breathless’ by Yang Ik-Joon (2009), ‘Passerby’ by Shin Su-won (2009), and ‘Mother is A Whore’ by Lee Sang Woo (2009). The ’Mabuhay Mr.Kim! Focus on Korean Cinema’ tribute program is presented by the Cinemanila International Film Festival and supported by the Film Development Council of the Philippines. The 12th Cinemanila International Film Festival will be held from December 1 to 5, 2010 in Robinsons Movieworld Galleria, Quezon City. Around 50 international and local films will be screened in a span of 5 days – from the current toasts of the local indie scene to the award-winners and favorites at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Pusan. The festival will also feature workshops, seminars and master classes.
